Which is better coffee or tea?

Ever since man has put his foot on this planet, he has shown his true colors. Man has got everything that he needed. Naturally he was provided with food and drinks. And he has been exploiting the resources of nature because man knows that he will find something or the other which will benefit him. The quest may give rise to something that is new and even more beneficial. And hence that is the way man has been, he has always compared. He has the habit of drawing a comparison between everything that he has got and everything that he thought he would get.

As mentioned above, man has always got what he wanted. When he started living on the planet, the food and the drinks that he required were available naturally. Whether they were the fruits or vegetables, or plain simple water, it was available. And with the advent of time man also discovered fire. And naturally after discovering fire he started doing things that he had never done before. This included finding out new things which already existed on the face of this earth and also use them for the benefits that he would provide themselves with. And in this process man also came across the most important drinks in today’s world, tea and coffee.

It is the most widely consumed drinks in the world though tea has a better hold over the market and its consumers. Tea is an everyday drink and everyone consumes it on a large scale. The hot beverage was made better and better over the period of time.

People in many countries started the same with the coffee bean that they had found and were surely going to get the maximum benefit out of it. And in the process of doing all this, the coffee lovers started asking one question how one is tea better than the other whence both are consumed in such high amounts.

Well arguments like these where which is better and which is not, people don’t usually win. That is because when you will ask a tea lover if he likes it over coffee he will definitely say a yes. Whereas the coffee lovers will say something else and this will be a never ending fight.

The weather too plays an important role in seeing which is consumed more. And what is it that people have been trying to do is switch drinks and trying on something new? With natural anti oxidants and elements that support the immunity system, how is tea better than coffee can be answered but no one really will. At the end what matters now is the preference of the people and not the kind and quality of the product that will be available.

Albeit coffee is consumed in many nations the health benefits of tea are becoming obvious and attracting new customers.

All is good about tea - But

All is good about tea but do not drink it in excess. Excessive tea consumption can lead to acidity hence stomach upset. Albeit there is no evidence about the harmful effects of this brew excessive consumption of any substance is bad.

Large amount of green tea consumption can cause problems hence a doctor should be consulted first. Although no harmful effects of tea consumption have been noted but the high concentration caffeine can cause problems. However green tea or less processed teas are certainly beneficial because of polyphenol which is an excellent antioxidant.

The beneficial chemicals present in the tea leaf percolate down to  the brew. These are the agents which regulate human health, prevent disease and make the body resistant to many ills.  Researchers attribute various benefits to different types of teas available in the market. The plant in all the cases is the same but its variety differs which brings about change in the flavor. The major difference arises in the way leaf is processed. Less processed leaves retain much of the health beneficial chemicals whilst those grown under different shades of sun retain some chemicals with different health attributes.

Green tea lowers bad cholesterol, helps maintain blood pressure and prevents hardening of arteries on regular consumption. Similarly studies have shown green tea to be beneficial in case of various ailments. With more in depth research evidence that supports curative properties of the tea will emerge.

Health is important yes! But whence the agent that cures offers mouth watering taste, wonderful aroma and  cheers what more you need. Consider health benefits as additional benefit.

In many countries the brew is offered to visiting businessmen anytime the meeting takes place. Similarly it is offered to house guests any time of the day. Tea is also instrumental in cementing relationship. This could be between friends and relatives, lovers and acquaintances and during important meetings.

Tea is consumed most during wedding ceremonies, business meets, seminars, product launches, sporting events and what not.

The consumption usually depends upon the availability of the hot brew. In India chai or spiced tea is available in all urban and rural surroundings hence ordering hot tea is a matter of minutes. The widespread availability of ready chai increases consumption many times. This is thanks to chai wallahs all over the country.

In countries where tea is available only in selected places the consumption declines. This happens in most Western Countries where coffee is more popular. In these countries the brew is not a part of social or ritualistic occasions. Hence the consumption is strongly motivated by personal like. The usage is growing in these countries due to easy availability in malls, market places and online. The product availability online means one can buy any type of  leaf from world over. The health benefits are another reason for increased usage in non tea drinking Nations.

Ritualistic consumption of the hot brew is more popular in the Oriental Realm. In Western Countries like UK English Tea Rooms or Tea Parties invite consumption. While traditional ceremonies in China and Japan make green leaf very popular. Certain premium leaves like Darjeeling from India are very popular ceremonial accompaniments in the tea parties.

India is among the major tea producer in the World. The unique leaf known as Darjeeling Tea is grown in the Indian state of West Bengal. Some black leaves from Assam also fall into the premium category.

The blending has become an art form with availabilities of many varieties. Hence major companies employ master tea taster to create the finest blends.

About Iced tea

This tea was consumed in many Southern States of North America before it was accidentally introduced by Richard Blechynden during a fair.

Iced tea is now a worldwide phenomenon it is consumed in many countries including India. In India premix iced tea is available in powder form in cartons. One can also avail  iced tea from a vending machine.

This form of tea is available in many flavors and competes with the cola beverages. The consumption of  iced tea extract is increasing in hot countries like India rapidly.  With changing lifestyles the cool beverage is giving tough competition to colas in countries where tea is popular.

Tea Recipe: Steeping

The vast and varied World of Tea has its own characteristic brewing style. While the chai wallahs in India boil the brew over and over the tea brewing elsewhere could be a subtle affair. What type of leaves people prefer also differs? In some cultures green leaf is part of lifestyle while others may prefer the strong astringent flavor of the black leaf.

One way of making the hot beverage is steeping. In this case the water is brought to boil and then transferred to the pot.  The leaves are then immersed in a loose form. They are kept in the hot water for few minutes before the brew is poured through the stainer for drinking. Similar immersion could be carried out after the water has cooled down. This way the lead does not get cooked and the flavor obtained differs.  Ice tea could also be prepared in this manner.

During this process the flavors and nutrients dissolve in the water. The method usually delivers a subtle flavor and the green leaf is most popularly used. The temperature varies and depends upon which tea leaf is used. Oolong, White, Green or Black tea. The steeping time also makes a difference in taste. If the leaves are kept for a longer time tannins are released in the water making the brew taste bitter.

Tea gardens in India

Tea is a plant that is consumed on a daily basis in India. India in Asia is one of the largest producers and most of the produce is consumed locally and the rest is exported. Since tea is one of the products that are consumed throughout India, the different tea companies are trying to expand their base.

Many tea companies that India own large numbers of tea gardens and its predominance is seen in states like Assam, west Bengal, Karnataka, all north eastern states, states have tropical conditions and hill slopes. The hilly areas in the country are being utilized to a great extent by cutting terraces on them and using them for  cultivation. The owners of the major tea processing companies in India are acquiring more and more land. All the hilly areas that were once abandoned are now being converted into tea gardens in the country.

Tea garden owning in India are also responsible for the increase in employment in the private sector. With the increase in the number of tea gardens, the labor required also increases and hence employment and income both is generated.

The tea garden owning industries have to be very careful with the location of the gardens. Owning a tea garden a proper place matters. The climatic factor is the most essential factor when it comes to plantation of tea. Then comes the soil. The tea gardens are established  on the hill slopes. Since the land is inclined there is no water logging when the  plantation is done.

Tea companies that do not own gardens keep buying raw leaves from other estates. The processing time is very little since the leaf might lose its essence and flavor hence timely procurement is important. Many companies own large tea gardens some are working towards acquiring more of them. With this the prediction of tea production to rise steadily is definitely going to come true in the near future.

Most of the tea estates are established in the Indian State of Assam, Darjeeling Hills in West Bengal and the Nilgiris in the South. Tea estate companies do not necessarily own major brands many are just processors and suppliers of the leaf.

Major tea producing centers have become destinations for tourism. There are many tour companies organizing tours to tea estates. This is a unique experience of local culture with insight into cultivation, processing amd packaging of tea. The salubrious climate and picturesque settings are instrumental in attracting many inbound tourists.

This in spite of the plant being the same with little species variation. The major factors that determine the two aspects are the soil, climate, altitude and cultivation method adopted.

The other factors that influence the flavor and aroma are the processing and blending with minor role being played by the storage or packing. Since a large variety of teas are grown and processed in tea gardens blending becomes important. The other reasons for blending are to obtain a said flavor or to manage the costs. Expensive teas like the premium Darjeeling tea are often mixed with regular black tea in order to reduce the cost.

The brewing method also influences the flavor and aroma. In many countries brewing is a ceremonial ritual that is on vogue since many centuries. Masalas or spices also play a great role in the way the tea tastes. Nevertheless black tea finds the greatest popularity among the masses. Darjeeling tea is most popular as a premium beverage along with some varieties of green teas. Some of the leaf cultivated in China, Japan and India are popular as premium blends. The flavors are usually defined as strong, mild and light. Black tea is usually consumed a strong with strong flavor of tannins and other aromatic chemicals. High quality Darjeeling tea  has a slight bitter astringent flavor with very strong aroma.

The hot tea beverage is not to be confused with herbal teas. These are a concoction of many herbs and usually do not contain the tea leaf.

Chai Wallahs

India is a unique and diverse country with amazing characteristic styles that lean on brink of being bizarre. The ubiquitous road side scene is large number of people on road, shanty shacks, and tea shops. The roadside in case of Indian baazars are dotted with pan shops, kirana stores, chaat wallahs and the chai wallah.

The chai wallah may be nothing but a rickety hand cart or a small shop tucked away in a row. The latter may also be selling a wide variety of Indian fried snacks.  Thee hand carts selling tea in India are most numerous. In Southern India they may  also be selling coffee.

The daily draws have a well set rapport with the chai wallah. Local business persons, office workers and visitors frequent these stalls and spend reasonable time listening to the chai wallahs banter or just gape at the World go past.

The brewing style is as mesmerizing as the ensuing aroma is. The boiling liqueur is literally tossed in the air and collected back in the pan with acrobatic ease. In between sugar, spices and leaf are added algorithmically.  Each chai wallah has a unique way of brewing and serving the final concoction.

The usual medium is small cheap glasses that do not cause any concern if broken or lost. These are briskly washed with murky water and steaming stream of tea poured into them. The liqueur is a thick extract of all the aromatic as well as non aromatic constituents of the tea leaf and the masalas. Nevertheless you get a flavor that does not distill during the brewing at home. The flavor and aroma is addicted and hence tea makers in the offices rust within a short period of disuse.

The chai wallah and his masala tea are irreplaceable for the masses in India. Everywhere you go there is one serving the magic brew...hot and steaming. Be careful or you will end up with scalded oral cavity.

Green Tea Cancer Fighting Ability

It has been known since ages that tea has disease prevention abilities. In ancient times the brew was consumed for its health giving properties. In recent times lot of attention has been paid towards the beneficial aspects of  tea.

The chemicals in the hot tea brew contain antioxidants that fight cancer by neutralizing the free radicals. Free radicals induce mutation by damaging the DNA inside the human cells. A polyphenol known as ECGC is effective in preventing the development and proliferation of cancer cells in the human body. The compounds assist the cell to die out which the cancer cells are unable to do. This activity shrinks or completely reduces tumors in various parts of the body. ECGC also increases vascular elasticity and hence improves cardiovascular health. A daily dose of tea extract is effective in this role.

Free radicals are also responsible for aging. The consumption of three to four cups of this beverage brings in the anti aging effect. Other chemical compounds in green tea play a proactive role. Green tea also contains anti viral compounds which help tackle infections.

The beneficial chemicals in green tea are known as flavonoids, catechins and poly phenols. These chemicals have a synergistic effect in conjunction and benefit human health by fighting serious disease. Major benefits accrue when organic green tea is consumed which  is devoid of harmful substances. Organic tea plant cultivation is done without the use of pesticides and fertilizers.

History of tea in brief

Tea has been consumed in many countries since thousands of years. First creditable records appear from China dating back to the 3rd century AD. The use in earlier period may have been for medicinal purpose and its use as beverage may have been accidental.

The tea may have been used similarly in Eastern India but there are no records. The tea was introduced into India during the 19th century by the British. They used Chinese Seed and cultivation technique on large scale of lands cleared for tea plantation. Some local Assamese variety was also cultivated. Today India is the largest producer of tea leaf after China and exports a substantial amount in bulk and packets. Several varieties of tea is grown in many countries now but not on very large scale.

Eventually tea become popular among the Indian masses as late as 1950. This was due to aggressive promotion by the rulers. Today it has become a lifestyle product with it being consumed daily in the morning and evening. Tea is served almost any time of the day to visitors and business associates etc.

The number of varieties of this wonderful brew is mind boggling with Assam Black and Darjeeling Green being the connoisseurs choice. The leaf after blending by experts is available in many kinds of packing. The carton is most popular followed by tea bags and plastic jars. Tea leaf is also available in loose bags or big cartons.

The brew is consumed without milk in many countries. In India it is prepared with milk and sugar. Another Indian brew that is very popular is the Masala Chai or Spiced tea. This is actually a mixture of tea leaf with suitable spices offering additional flavor to the taste. A vast variety of spices are used to blend with the leaf. In college days I used to frequent the coffee houses in Jabalpur. These were community places where you could sit for hours gossip, chat or fall into an intellectual discussion over a cup of coffee. Hence these houses were frequented by regulars mostly retired people, recluse and people who had nothing much to do. Well it was fun for us and we still do it but not most often.

This is what the tea lounges promise - a community place with an added advantage of modern decor and stylish ambiance. In things is what you would refer them as well more are to come. These are for those who like cheerful places with delicious hot beverages and not the murky dingy alcohol bars.

Green Tea Healthy or Not

The whole world is abuzz with a wonder that is green tea. Be it health benefits, weight loss and magical cure for major diseases. This is the most talked about beverage in the World.

Though limited studies have been carried out on green tea health benefits the gains are obvious. First of all the tea itself is beneficial as it contains antioxidants and other healthy chemicals. It cheers what can be more healthy?

Constant research is yielding positive results about the gains from drinking green tea. If we take this beverage and compare it with black tea which is consumed the most all over the World then green tea comes out to be the winner.

The process in case of green tea is much short which helps preserve antioxidants and other healthy chemicals. This is not so in the case of black leaf where processing is longer with greater exposure to sun.

The magic chemical is catechin which prevents damage from free radicals. These free radicals cause cancer and damage the free radical.

How much green tea to drink?

Well I personally believe that consumption of this hot beverage should be as a matter to routine. Consume it as an when you like to drink tea in your daily life. Normally people consume this hot beverage during the morning and evening that would amount to four cups. I would also suggest to drink it before night sleep. This would clear the whole oral cavity besides relaxing your nerves to augur sound sleep.

There are many brands of green tea available in the market. Most of these are affordable but organic tea brands are costlier. The tea exporters process. blend and pack green tea in countries like India and China.
